What was your first international trip?

I was nine years old and it was a family holiday to the States. That was when I discovered comedy. Sitting on the plane for 18 or so hours, I spent the entire time listening to the Comedy Channel over and over. It was a thrill years later to hear my own material played in-flight.

How important is travel to you?

It allows me to perform stand-up comedy to new people. Sometimes the travel really takes its toll the last time I spent an entire year in the one country was 1996 but at the end of the day it is enjoyable.

What do you do when you land in a city?

I watch local television. If the news is on it lets me know what is topical and if it's crappy daytime TV it will give me material to joke about on stage.

Describe your recent travels.

A few months ago I flew to Hong Kong for a night. I left Melbourne at midnight on a Tuesday, having gone to the airport directly from a gig. I landed in Hong Kong at 7am, slept until 11, then prepared for the gig that night. It was a corporate show for about 400 bankers. I did the gig, then went out drinking and dancing until 6am and got on a flight at 10am to return to Melbourne. I woke up mid-flight with a hangover, landed in Melbourne at 10pm on the Thursday, then went straight to Channel Nine to appear on a telethon for the Victorian bushfires.

Do you tire of travel?

Yes, see above question.

Do you have any tips for arriving fresh?

Don't go out drinking and dancing until 6am if you have a 10am flight.

Can you distinguish these days between leisure travel and business travel?

When I travel for leisure I'm more relaxed, because I know if I miss a flight, there won't be 400 people at the other end sitting in a theatre, looking at an empty stage.

Favourite destination?

Home. I am a Sydney boy at heart and there is nothing quite like landing in the place you grew up.

Where would you like to be rightnow?

On my parents' balcony, looking over the valley.
