Frequent Flyer: Alex Cearns

Alex Cearns is one of Australia’s leading animal and wildlife portrait photographers.

Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hobart, Tasmania. It is right on the historic waterfront on the original Hobart town site, which presents guests with a stunning view and great access to the centre of the city. The beautifully transformed 1804 building is a wonderful fusion of antique and historic features and it has an ultra-modern art collection of about 300 pieces.

As a transport security inspector for the federal government in a past career, I became familiar with the intimate workings of airlines and airports. Consequently, I also became quite particular about which airlines I fly with, sometimes right down to which aircraft. Generally, I book with Qantas when I’m flying within Australia. All our airlines have good safety records, but Qantas has one of the best.

Cape Lodge is my choice for special occasions. It is a world-class, private boutique hotel located on its own vineyard in Margaret River in Western Australia. The grounds are stunning, with vast areas to explore on leisurely walks.

IT Porto hard suitcase. It has a large capacity, an inbuilt lock and a durable hard shell. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.

The Samsonite Luggage Cart is great when I have to walk long distances between flights. On the plane, it folds up to stash under the seat or in the overhead compartment.

Next month I’ll be in Indonesia and Borneo on tour with the Orangutan Project. In June, we are travelling to Tanzania on one of our World Expedition trips, and later to Thailand and then India. See
