What was your first international trip?

I came to live in Sydney from Israel with my family when I was nine. I travelled via England and France so I was probably more focused on the adventure than the final destination. Culturally Sydney was very different. I was used to apartment living and playing soccer on the concrete outside and now there was so much space. It was so weird to have to get on on a bike to visit friends.

How important is travel to you in relation to your music?

Growing up in Israel I listened to and was influenced by both Western and Eastern music. There was no strong differentiation between what would be classed as world music and what wasn't.

What do you do when you land in a new city?

I rely on local knowledge. I get in touch with a friend of a friend and avoid tourist traps.

Describe your recent travels.

Most recently I've been in New York and Paris. France has a great tradition with emerging artists and the initial response while performing around the city clubs was great.

Do you have any tips for arriving fresh?

I drink loads of water and get as much sleep as possible - I tend to forget what time zone I'm in - I'd like to think I could be like a camel and rack up sleep and store it in a hump.

Favourite performance destination?

Carnegie Hall was pretty special [Lior performed during the GDay USA: Australia Week 2009]. It's the mecca of live music.

Where would you like to be right now?

Byron Bay. It's not as exotic as Brazil but it's where I really like to be.

Lior performs at the Sydney Opera House tonight in his Shadows And Light Tour.
