The Mornington Peninsula's wineries, beaches and sculpture parks are known lures for travellers – now it's time to put an industrial estate on the must-visit list.

A collection of brewers and bakers, distillers and surfboard makers has banded together to create the Habitat artisan precinct, hidden in Dromana's Industrial Estate, an hour south of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

Each has staked out its space here and all have a feel-good story, such as independent custom surfboard manufacturer Bass Surfboards, which stocks surf apparel by local artist Jack Miers and holds surf movie and music nights in its space (the next one is April 3) See bass-surfboards.com.au,

The plastic-free Vegan Dairy is renowned for its goats-cheese-style made with organic cashews, while gluten-free brewery TwøBays has nine coeliac-friendly and vegan beers on tap made from millet, buckwheat and rice. It is joined by solar-powered Millers' Bread Kitchen and Peninsula Fresh Seafood, which harvests mussels from Dromana Bay, and lets you know when the next catch is in by text message. If you haven't touched rum & coke since an ill-fated run-in as a teen, Jimmy Rum's Cuba Libre - featuring the bar's own Barbados rum and a cola & lime ball - will show you how adults drink this spicy highball. It's also collaborating with local winery Foxey's Hangout to expand its cocktails served at the bar or in its new rum garden. See jimmyrum.com.au

Two members of the cluster - Little Rebel Coffee Roastery and Jetty Road Brewery – have teamed up to create a Rebel Road Cascara Sour, and there's Jetty Road's new Milk Choc Stout in time for Easter. While you're there, try the new Siduri Brut IPA, "a bold beer brewed by the strong women of Jetty Road," which was launched last week for International Women's Day. All nine makers are within a one kilometre square, but if nine is too uneven, add a tenth to the list - Crittenden Estate is a three-minute drive from the industrial estate and newly crowned the world's most sustainable winegrowers at the recent International Sustainable Winegrowing Competition in Texas.
