I know this great little place ...

MARTIN BOSLEY

MARTIN BOSLEY'S, ROYAL PORT NICHOLSON YACHT CLUB, WELLINGTON

Bosley's seafood restaurant, above the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, opened in 2001 and was New Zealand's 2007 Restaurant of the Year. See martin-bosley.com.

WHERE'S THE BEST TABLE IN WELLINGTON?

Breakfast or lunch at the end of the bar at Nikau, a daytime cafe just off Civic Square. Think organic chicken soup with herbed ricotta gnocchi. See nikaucafe.co.nz.

LOCAL FOOD DISCOVERY OF THE PAST YEAR?

That samphire grows wild and in abundance only 10 minutes from the restaurant. Its delicate saltiness is the perfect accompaniment to fish.

WHAT IS WELLINGTON'S BEST-KEPT FOOD SECRET?

Unashamedly: City Market, a food and wine community, which I co-founded, every Sunday morning undercover in the atrium of the Chaffers Dock Apartments. I make bacon butties, there's seafood chowder, condiments and much more. See citymarket.co.nz.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR A BIG NIGHT OUT?

Havana Bar: two old colonial cottages nestled in between high-rise buildings, turned into an oasis of rum, music, fab cocktails, great tapas and a full dinner menu.

See havanabar.co.nz.

FAVOURITE INDULGENCE?

Deep-fried oysters and chardonnay at my bar on a Friday afternoon.

WHAT'S HOT IN THE CITY RIGHT NOW?

Prefab, a new venture from Jeff Kennedy and co. It's a light, unpretentious eatery with the southern hemisphere's longest espresso bar, coffee roasted on site and great service. Nothing's over $20. See pre-fab.co.nz.

BEST TIME TO VISIT?

During the Wellington on a Plate festival, August 9-25. More than 100 of the city's restaurants come together to present hundreds of events, special menus and other food experiences.
