The Queensland borders are open to some, and so is the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort after a $6 million refurbishment.

Set over 4.2 hectares of sub-tropical garden and home to the "one acre Lagoon Beach", the property's 251 rooms and suites now in shades of blue, olive green, grey and white with gold fittings house new bedding and furniture. In the Cove Cafe serving breakfast tapas, new interiors include large white French doors opening onto the Fountain Terrace, oak panelling and olive-hued velvets.

A new seafood a la carte menu on Saturday nights features Southern Indian style fish curry with Ballina snapper, Yamba prawns and Coffin Bay oysters and on the High Coffee menu adjust your belts in readiness for caramel mousse with edible florals and and open brioches filled with salmon parfait caviar.

From the resort, guests can access three championship golf courses, the Sanctuary Cove Country Club and marina.

Sanctuary Cove was launched with the help of stars Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston back in 1988.

Rooms from $180 a night. See intercontinentalsanctuarycove.com/
