TripAdvisor has announced its world's best destination for 2016 in its annual Travellers' Choice awards, but Australia fell well short of the top 10.

Described as "one of the world's most admired destinations", London was named the favourite in this year's Travellers' Choice awards despite its rainy and cold reputation, with an average temperature of between 20 and 22 degrees in summer.

London climbed five spots to become the favourite thanks to its mix of culture, music, history, fashion, food and beer. The Tate Modern, the Royal Opera House, Harrods and Abbey Road were mentioned as attractions that distinguish the English capital as a favourite ahead of Istanbul, in second place, and third-placed Marrakesh, which was named the top destination in 2015.

Despite the attacks in Paris last year travellers still love the French capital, putting it among the top five best cities in the world. In fourth spot, the "City of Love" was recognised for its "beauty and love encapsulating essence" and the deep sense of cultural and political history. The city is home to some of the world's most popular tourist attractions including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.

Siem Reap, the resort town in north-western Cambodia, takes out the No.5 spot on the list. It remains a popular destination year on year because it serves as a gateway to the ruins of Angkor Wat. The country's recent history resonated with travellers, a reminder of the horrendous effects of war and internal conflict.

Taking out the sixth and seventh spots, respectively, are European cities Prague and Rome. The Czech capital was noted for its "bohemian allure and fairytale features" and its strong sense of culture and historical sites including Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle). Rome, known for its outrageous cost of gelatos, retains its No.7 spot having been noted as a city "reminiscent of a real-life collage of piazzas, open-air markets, and mind-boggling historic sites" and of course its shopping. The city has been the backdrop for a number of films, including Roman Holiday.

Hanoi, Vietnam's historic and cultural capital, dropped four spots to No.8. It remains in the top 10 list for its transformation from a city with deep-rooted French colonial history and architecture to one "forging a contemporary path".

At number nine is New York City. A consistent favourite among travellers, New York is home to some of the world's best hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars. It's a melting pot for fashion, art, music and everything big, bright and brash. It's even been immortalised in song by Frank Sinatra and Alicia Keys.

Rounding out the top 10 is Ubud, the cultural and artistic hub of Bali. Sounded by rainforest and terraced rice paddies, Ubud is home to some Bali's most iconic landscapes and some of Asia's most luxurious spa resorts. See the full list of world's top 10 Travellers' Choice Destinations below.

No Australian cities made the top 20 list; Sydney was ranked as the 24th best city for travellers this year climbing up one spot since last year. Sydney was also named the No.1 city in Australia and also in the South Pacific in this year's Travellers' Choice awards.
