Make the most of a solo adventure Stateside

By Michael Gebicki

I'd like to travel to the US late next month. This will be my first trip there and I have been told there are two must-see cities: San Francisco and New York. I plan to drive from San Fran to Las Vegas over a number of days, then fly to New York for a week or two. Would I be safe to do this on my own? Which neighbourhoods should I avoid? How do I make hotel bookings and what is the best approach for a single person on a trip like this, especially in New York?

Even for a first-timer travelling alone, this trip should present no problems. Among places likely to be visited by a tourist, the Tenderloin is the only part of San Francisco that might be an issue in terms of personal security but, overall, Fog City is not dangerous for travellers. The only suburbs to strictly avoid are Bayview and Visitacion Valley but these are well off the tourist track.

The drive from San Francisco to Las Vegas is either freeways or highways and safety is no more an issue than on similar roads in Australia. If you want postcard scenery, you might like to take in Yosemite and Death Valley national parks along the way. New York requires planning.

You need to focus on your areas of interest - galleries, theatre, specialty shopping and food are just some options in this city of infinite delights. Start with the online New York chapters of Fodor's (fodors.com), Frommer's (frommers.com) and Conde Nast Traveller (cntraveller.com) for helpful suggestions.

Regarding hotels, see Tripadvisor (tripadvisor.com) and check the reviews within your price bracket to find something you like. Next, go to one of the hotel booking sites and make a reservation - Wego (wego.com) and Kayak (kayak.com) are solid choices.

As a general rule, in any foreign city, try to blend in. Those who seem easy targets attract evil-doers. Do not look too rich. Step out with a brisk stride and look like you know where you are going.
