The Central Coast is a great getaway for its beaches, shimmering lagoons and stunning natural vistas. Beyond the expected sun, water and scenery, however, the region's arts and culture scene has been quietly flourishing. Here is just some of the creativity you can enjoy in this arty enclave.

History and heritage

Signs of an age-old indigenous presence dot the Central Coast, including rock engravings depicting animals and ancestral figures that demonstrate the arts scene has thrived for tens of thousands of years.

Shopping and local makers

When the sun shines and the cockatoos wheel in a blue sky, you couldn't explore the Central Coast's happy creativity in any better place than its markets, where local artists and artisans showcase a huge range of home wares, jewellery, fashions, handicrafts and more.

The gallery's Edogawa Commemorative Garden demonstrates the gentle, season-changing art of the traditional Japanese garden. Meandering pathways, a teahouse and ponds full of fat fish provide vignettes straight from scroll paintings.

If you love gardens, you'll also want to visit Mt Penang Gardens, particularly notable for aquatic gardens, water birds and the Wondabyne Sculptures created by international artists. Take a guided sculpture tour for a more in-depth look at the artworks.
