Meredith - Culture and History

It developed adjacent the Coolebarghurk Creek in the 1850s on the gold route to Ballarat. Today it is a small centre of about 320 people amidst a large dairying and agricultural district.

The streets were named after pioneer settlers when the town was first laid out. Two historic homesteads reflect the early European history of the district. These are 'Darra', a Georgian brick homestead built in 1842 as 'Durdidwarrah' by pastoralist Charles Augustus von Steiglitz (see entry on Steiglitz which is located 10 km south-east of Meredith), and 'Woodbourne' homestead, built of horizontal pit-sawn timber planks between 1844 and 1853. The former is on the eastern side of town and the latter to the west.
