My dream destinations: Thomas Hamel, interior designer

MY ONE DREAM DESTINATION IS STILL …

Italy's Amalfi Coast, and in particular Capri. For more than 20 years I've typically spent my birthday in July on the island. For one special birthday, I hosted around 70 Australian and global friends at a marvellous restaurant (reached only by boat), Conca del Sogno. The zucchini pasta and seafood is unsurpassed, and the freshly cut peaches served in pitchers of white wine look so festive. My summer wardrobe is definitely missing the annual visits to Capri as the chic shops are full of the best of Italian summer clothing.

WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER I'M DREAMING OF VISITING …

Japan. Last September I was booked to visit Kyoto for the first time, and I am sad the trip could not proceed. Japan is a place of such refined and edited beauty and design. I have always been inspired by Japanese gardens, and the wabi-sabi principle of "less is more" is something I wanted to experience first-hand. The new Aman Kyoto hotel looks sensational.

MY DREAM TRAVEL BUBBLE DESTINATION IS …

New Zealand. Although it is close to Australia in distance, it feels like you have travelled much further. My special memories are visits to wonderful lodges like Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers and to vineyards around Hawke's Bay. Craggy Range is one of my favourites.

MY DREAM DOMESTIC DESTINATION IS …

Western Australia. I have wonderful clients with projects in Perth, and I'm looking forward to exploring beyond my work in the city to the extraordinary places outside. I am keen to visit Rottnest Island and the Margaret River region. My clients have purchased homes along the coast south of Perth. We can only do so much work via Zoom and I am desperate to see these magnificent locations in person.

MY DREAM DOMESTIC TRIP SO FAR HAS BEEN ...

Queensland's Lizard Island. From the moment you land on the single strip runway, you're transported to another time and place. I love that it is not only a resort, but also a fantastic research station for the Barrier Reef. The accessibility to the coral and the reef, literally on the beach outside your room, was sensational. I will never forget the experience of swimming amongst turtles. We are blessed to call Australia home.
