My travel dream: Author and actor William McInnes

MY ONE DREAM DESTINATION IS STILL …

Japan. It's got great food and beer. It's sort of familiar and impenetrable at the same time. People there are astonishingly polite and generous and yet impenetrable. It's also the home of Gigantor the Space Age Robot.

I first went in Christmas 2015. Special memories include seeing the Gigantor statue at Kobe, getting stuck in a small lift with my brother on the way up to a cat café his daughter wanted to see, and a trip in a ski lift in Nagano where my brother and I re-enacted the cable car scene from Where Eagles Dare.

WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER I'M DREAMING OF VISITING …

Florida. To see the Hall of Presidents at Disney World, because a director friend of mine said that the animatronic presidents reminded her of my acting. I want to see if she was right or she was short-changing me and the presidents.

MY DREAM TRAVEL BUBBLE DESTINATION IS …

New Zealand. It's not far away and easy to get to. It's got a bit of everything, a smorgasbord of culture, geographical wonder and it's actually quite lovely to go to a place that is so similar to home but at the same time is as different to home as can be. And it's nice to remember what the NZ stands for in ANZAC. Wonderful place with wonderful people.

MY DREAM DOMESTIC DESTINATION IS …

Wherever my family might be and have been. I love Point Lookout and The Redcliffe Peninsula in Queensland. Makes me feel close to people who have passed, makes me remember people I loved and makes me think of people I love.

MY DREAM DOMESTIC TRIP SO FAR HAS BEEN ...

I had a cracking trip to the border country of Victoria and NSW with a couple of pals which was a like a cross between Deliverance, The Hangover films and Weekend at Bernie's. Unbelievably funny and made no sense whatsoever – but made us all better people. Sort of. No, not really, but it was a ripping time.

William McInnes' new book is Christmas Tales (Hachette Australia, $32.99). See hachette.com.au
