Nature Lovers Nook, Tuerong review: It's only natural

Cabin fever ... Nature Lovers Nook is a great place to relax.

Cabin fever ... Nature Lovers Nook is a great place to relax.

Patricia Maunder finds a mud-brick haven in the woods where wildlife abounds.

Having to drive down a few unsealed roads augurs well for this bed and breakfast living up to its name. The final turn, into the aptly named Woodlands Road, takes my companion and me to the edge of a wildlife reserve and up the leafy driveway of Nature Lovers Nook.

After a quick but thorough introduction to our accommodation, our warm but unobtrusive hosts tell us there is a juvenile grey kangaroo hanging around the back of the property, which opens onto Woodlands Reserve. We hurry out and there he is, nibbling at the grass. Within 10 minutes of our arrival, the city seems far away and Nature Lovers Nook is shaping up to be exactly that.

During our stay we spot a kookaburra and colourful parrots, chat to the chickens, a duck and a goose and play with the friendly, small white dogs in residence. The air is fresh, the gardens (including fruit trees, herbs, vegetables, climbers and flowers) are extensive and right on the doorstep is the reserve for rambling and animal-spotting.

For those without a fascination for nature, there is still plenty to enjoy. Built from mud bricks and timber, the separate guest accommodation is dominated by a large kitchen and even larger living area, which features a slow-combustion wood heater. There are two bathrooms (one has a bath) and two bedrooms (one nicely set up for two children).

Shades of brown and cream dominate, with furnishings and accessories made of natural materials such as wood and wicker. Vintage rustic elements and earthy Australiana, such as dried native flora and indigenous paintings and craft, characterise the decor.

There are plenty of mod-cons, including DVD and CD players, and most kitchen equipment you would have at home - even some you probably don't, such as an egg poacher. The only real disappointment for someone wanting to cook up a feast with their Mornington Peninsula produce is the lack of an oven or stove but there's a microwave and electric hotplates.

A big gas barbecue provides a great option in the pleasant gardens on a warm day.

Generous breakfast provisions include homegrown goodies; each egg is marked with the date it was laid and the name of the chook who provided it.

If homey and natural is what you want your getaway to be about, Nature Lovers Nook is an ideal place to settle.

However, if you have a busy daytime schedule, it's also a great spot to relax and recover in the evening. Light the fire and open a bottle of wine, then get cosy with a book or the big chess set provided. Getting close to nature is rarely this comfortable or civilised.
