PENNY-PINCH

Rent a bike (broomecycles.com.au; $24) and pedal around Roebuck Bay, then out to Cable Beach for a swim. If it's Saturday, head to Broome Courthouse Markets to browse fashion, photographs and indigenous art, and tuck into a takeaway laksa ($15). Spend the afternoon in Chinatown, an area of old corrugated-iron buildings and numerous souvenir stores and cafes. Buildings along Johnny Chi Lane have descriptions and photos of 19th-century Chinatown. By this time you will have earned a mango beer at Matso's Broome Brewery (matsos.com.au; $8), accompanied by a feta and olive wrap and a bay view ($19). Stay at Beaches of Broome (beachesofbroome.com.au; dorms from $24) near Cable Beach, which demonstrates style for backpackers with pool, communal kitchen, and complimentary breakfast and airport pickup.

TOTAL: $90

EASY DOES IT

Learn about the history of pearl fishing from former divers at Pearl Luggers (pearlluggers.com.au; tours $20), where you can inspect a restored pearling ship. Then stroll through town, where you will find pearl shops for a splurge. For lunch, a creative bento box from Chinatown's Azuki Japanese Fusion ($27) is a flavoursome choice. The ornate Japanese Cemetery is fascinating, although a melancholy reminder of early pearl-collecting risks. Then head to Cable Beach to relax and swim. A romantic camel ride along the shoreline (redsuncamels.com.au; $75) is touristy for a reason: the sunset will not disappoint. Dine on mixed seafood at Zanders (zanders.com.au; $36), which has fantastic beach views. Stay on the clifftops of Roebuck Bay at modest but pleasant Mangrove Resort Hotel (mangrovehotel.com.au; $275 for ocean-view suite).

TOTAL: $433

SPLASH OUT

Board a helicopter for a bird's-eye coastline view and get a four-hour tour of Willie Creek (williecreekpearls.com.au; $285), a modern pearl farm. Lunch at Aarli Bar (theaarli.com.au; main about $28) on spaghettini with king prawns or green papaya chicken. Then take an indigenous tour (kujurtaburu.com.au; $88) through the red sand dunes of Minyirr Park, where the cultural element adds to the landscapes. Head to Cable Beach for a sunset cruise on a traditional pearl lugger (broomelugger.com; $149). Enjoy a cocktail and tapas such as confit pork belly and tempura tiger prawns at stylish Zee Bar (zeebar.com.au; about $10 a plate). Stay at deluxe, colonial-style Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa (cablebeachclub.com; bungalow from $400), with swimming pools set in lovely gardens and child-friendly facilities.
