Proston - Places to See

Sidcup Castle
Undoubtedly the highlight of any visit to Proston is a call at the unusual Sidcup Castle in Wondai Road. This strange 17-room building has become something of a local landmark. Built by expatriate Englishman Harold Douglas it is a replica of his childhood home in Kent. The house is full of unusual local memorabilia.

Boondooma Dam
22km west of the town the dam is a popular spot for fishing, camping, waterskiing, windsurfing and boating.

Brigooda Gemfields
26 km west of Proston are the well-known Brigooda Gemfields. The garnets which can be found in the area attract fossickers. A handy mud map of the gemfields can be obtained at Sidcup Castle.

Boondooma Homestead
49 km west of Proston is Boondooma Homestead. Now listed by the National Trust it was built around 1850 by the Lawson brothers who settled the area four years earlier. When the building was being restored it was discovered that it had been built to metric specifications by a Flemish stonemason. It is likely that it was the first metric building in Queensland. It is possible to inspect the old homestead most days between 9am and 4.30pm, check (07) 4168 0159 just in case. Tours with the caretaker are $5 per adult.
