The fashion watercolours by illustrator Kerrie Hess, which have graced the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, now have a home at The Langham, Melbourne. The Residence by Kerrie Hess is a new two-bedroom suite and features 14 striking artworks of women in couture striking various poses.
L'Hiver Rose, a model in a raspberry cape dress watches over guests fixing a drink from the cocktail cart while Racing Printemps in the main bedroom wears classic black, a nod to the style of the city of Melbourne, and Spring Racing, according to Brisbane based Hess in the hotel that earlier this month took out No.1 spot in the Conde Nast Traveler Readers' choice award in Australia and New Zealand.
The main artworks were painted in 2019 specifically for the hotel and inspired by 1950s Christian Dior designs and the soft "Dior pink".
"Even the style that these watercolours were painted in - inspired by magazine covers from the 1950s - have a vintage feeling to them. All of the pieces have been inspired in some way by the designs of Dior and the style of a Dior atelier, as well as a little black dress," Hess says.
Now back in her hometown, Brisbane, Hess lived in Melbourne for eight years and before that Paris for two. "We wanted to really create a sense of old-world Paris and romance for the suite so this was the inspiration for both the artworks and setting."
The light and feminine space of white, pastels and muted tones that includes the signature Langham pink features parquetry floors, French provincial furniture including king size velvet bedheads, oversized armchairs and a table setting for four.
While the cocktail cart might keep you in residence a change of scenery is close by with Club Lounge access on level 24. The intimate lounge serves breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapes as well as fine views of the Yarra, Flinders Street Station and across to the MCG.
