Small unspoilt village in the Adelaide Hills
Located in the heart of the Adelaide Hills 24 km via Glen Osmond Road, Crafers and Mount Lofty, Summertown is the very essence of the Hills. Where the other towns and villages have their own charm and sophistication, Summertown (particularly the road from Crafers to Summertown and from Summertown to Piccadilly) seems like a little piece of Italy or southern France magically transported to the hills outside Adelaide.

The town's name was suggested around 1870 by T. B. Percival who spent some time arguing with the local blacksmith, A. Lewis, who wanted the town named Newtown. One was to suggest that the town was a suitable retreat in the summer months; the other was presumably to suggest the newness of the town. A meeting of local settlers was held. It was chaired by Thomas Playford. The meeting liked Summertown and so it was that the village was named.

Today Summertown is in the heart of an area of the Adelaide hills where vegetables and fruit are grown. The village is tiny and non-commercial with only a general store and a rather charming post office.
