Tasmania: Hobart's new Forty Spotted Gin Bar opens
By Jane Reddy
Tasmania's Forty Spotted gin, named after the state's rarest bird, the forty-spotted pardalote, now has a bar of its own in central Hobart.
Opening later this month, and as border restrictions ease for some interstate visitors, the Forty Spotted Gin Bar will feature its namesake range, as well as gin from around Australia and the world, including Scotland's Isle of Raasay, Northern Ireland's Boatyard Gin and Germany's Berliner Brandstifter.
The bar's layout allows for socially distanced seating of 30 people at any one time and the design by March Studios involves thousands of individual pieces of timber, put together by hand to represent the nest of a pardalote.
The Forty Spotted "Ginstitute" will also open for patrons to blend a bespoke bottle of gin to take home. The COVID-safe workshops include a history of gin, participants can then do some blending, using the state's unique botanicals such as Oyster Bay pine, wattle seed, kunzea and Tasmanian mountain pepper berry.
The 90-minute workshop costs $99 a person. Level 1, 30 Argyle Street, Hobart.
