This photo was taken at dawn from our hotel balcony in Goreme, Turkey in August 2014. We were given a cup of coffee, and were rugged up against the cold. Our room was in the fairy chimney in the picture. Some of the balloons were so close we waved to the people in the baskets. There were hundreds of balloons. It was an amazing sight. The early morning light was beautiful. One of the highlights of our holiday in Turkey. Photo: Ann Thorburn -
The view from the San Juan Pass (4110m) in the Willkapampa Mountains of Peru demands the camera be set in panorama mode. The photo was taken on the 9 day Choquequirau to Machu Picchu trek in September, 2014. The scene was made more memorable by the fact that we shared it with only a handful of others who, like us, had to meet the huge physical challenge to get there. Photo: Bruce McLaughlan -
Taken at the 'Made In China' restaurant in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Beijing in October 2014. We were following the recommendation in our guide book to have a Beijing Duck meal here and were quite taken by the chef'Âs intense concentration as he carved our duck at the table. The lighting only seemed to add to the intensity of his work, and the duck was wonderful as well. Photo: Tony Whiddon -
'Close your eyes,' said our guide for the day to Hierapolis near Pamukkale in Turkey...'and you might just hear Cleopatra singing as she bathes.' All we heard were the squeals of tourists as they clambered over each other and the submerged fallen columns. We hastily left, to explore the small but fascinating museum metres away. No crowds there; they were more interested in getting sunburnt in the knee-deep pool than seeing the marvellous ancient statues and artefacts. Photo: Marjory Gardner -
Japan, Tokyo We had heard the Senso-Ji in Asakusa was one of the best sights in Tokyo, but by the time we had settled into our hostel, after a lengthy walk in the pouring rain, we were only able to get there at night time. To our surprise, the sight was much quieter and more beautiful at night, but it wasn't the temple that took our breath away. Halfway through the walk to the temple, you come across the Hozomon and five-storey pagoda, they are immense. The two structures lit up side by side make for an awesome spectacle. This was taken when on holidays at Strahan in a stunning waterfront setting on the west coast of Tasmania. I awoke to a beautiful calm morning and knew I had to get this photo, it was such a beautiful Risby Cove sunrise & calm day, what a gorgeous place, will be returning soon. Photo: Wayne Nanasi -
The Pushkar Camel Fair in India is a riot of colour, noise and movement. I was mesmerised by this girl calmly performing tightrope tricks as large crowds of people, decorated camels, drummers and dancers swirled in a chaotic but joyous celebration in the dust below her. Photo: Anna Johnston -
Agra, India. The Taj Mahal, said to be the world's most beautiful building, and perhaps the most photographed. It almost didn't look real, like it was made of ice or glass or just a trick of the light. But is there a photo that I haven'Ât seen a thousand times before? Then I caught sight of these three men, relaxing during the hot afternoon under the shade of a large tree. Photo: Peter Simpson -
The picture was taken off the coast from the village of Palafrugell, on the Costa Brava coast of Spain in July 2014. The photo was taken from the seabed looking up at my brother James floating on the surface of the ocean. It was such a memorable experience swimming through the crystal clear Mediterranean Sea, exploring the underwater world and the photo makes it look like James is floating in the middle of space. A great moment to share with a great bro! Photo: Lachlan Buckley -
Sunrise by the river at Sonepur in India, during an elephant fair. Although this photo evokes a sense of peace and quiet, in reality there was a cacophony of noise, as a group behind me were chanting and beating drums and cymbals, and elephants in the campground were baying for their breakfast. Appearances can be deceptive! Photo: Anna Johnston -
This photo was taken in the early morning a few days into a trek around the Huayhuash Circuit in the Peruvian Andes. The horse was called âÃÂÃÂ911âÃÂàbecause it was designated as the âÃÂÃÂambulanceâÃÂàin an emergency evacuation! The dog , who looks like heâÃÂÃÂs the horsesâÃÂàmate was one of the many that joined segments of the trek for a free feed. Photo: Robert Buckley -
This image was taken during an early morning walk to the top of Gokyo Ri (5,357m). The amazingly photogenic sacred lake by the same name and the endless snow-covered mountain ranges in the background more than compensate for the lack of oxygen. The yak perched on the edge of a cliff looked like he was there just to pose for our photos. Photo: Masha Prokudina -
I have been fortunate to have observed many sunsets from a number of places in Australia and abroad, but this sunset photographed whilst on holiday in Broome, of April this year, is by far my most memorable. At the precise moment of looking through the lens and snapping this photo, it felt as though I was the sole audience member of a majestic performance put on by this wonderful universe we are a part of... Is this the world's highest water fight? On a tour through Tibet in May 2013, we visited Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse. After the solemnity of prayers and chants in the temple, who'd have imagined what these young Buddhist monks would get up to next? They chased each other around outside, pouring teapots of icy cold water over one another and spraying everyone until no-one was left dry. It was one of those surprising but beautifully happy moments that reminded me how alike we all are, regardless of which part of the planet we come from. Photo: Peter Holmes
