The Dune House, Queenscliff accommodation review: Weekend away

The location

Queenscliff could almost pass itself off as an island. Geographically, little more than a highway connects the seaside town to the rest of the Bellarine Peninsula. Culturally, the area is wrapped tightly in old-fashioned values and architecture, but cafes, a smattering of shops and galleries and a sparkling new marina sustain its tourist credentials.

The place

Shrouded in ti-tree, it's easy to forget this place is parked just off the highway, save for the hum of traffic noticeable only from the front room. Backing onto the dunes, the semi-detached house is a sanctuary, its large rooms defined by mid-century-inspired architecture: blonde timber, glass, simple lines. With room for three couples and a gaggle of kids, the house sleeps 12, and three chic bathrooms eliminate queues. BYO linen (or a pricey supply set) is the only blip in an otherwise perfect stay - nobody wants to make beds on holiday.

The experience

Out the back gate, a track leads through dunes to the beach. The enchanting spider webs are dewy in the cool dawn. Queenscliff's main street is good for browsing, while lunch is gourmet fish and chips from the marina or fancy pub grub at one of the historic hotels. Following an afternoon of beach play, the rustic outdoor shower serves well for sandy feet and paws.

The well-equipped kitchen makes grand-scale cooking easy, and feasts can be served at the big table or out on the deck. Cooler weather calls for board games in front of an open fire with wood stacked at the ready.

Don't miss

Held on the last weekend of November, the family-friendly Queenscliff Music Festival hosts local and international acts with a folksy, bluesy bent, as well as colourful street entertainment.
