The Franklin Boutique Hotel, Adelaide review: Weekend away

The Franklin Boutique Hotel

The Franklin Boutique Hotel

The location

The Franklin is in the centre of Adelaide, a five-minute walk to the superb seasonal produce of the city's Central Market, a 10-minute stroll to Rundle Mall, and a 15-minute tram-ride away from North Terrace and the renowned South Australian Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia.

The place

A refurbished older-style hotel with a boutique feel to it. Each room is individually designed and has its own ensuite. The decoration of the rooms is funky, featuring work from local artists, and added creature comforts (Nespresso machines, iPod docks) ensure rapid chilling out. The bar downstairs offers a wide range of beverages, and is very popular with local office workers looking for a meal at lunchtime.

The experience

A great base, whether you want to stay in the city or go on a wine tour of the Barossa. The staff were extremely helpful and the complementary drink on arrival was gratefully accepted.

Don't miss

For dinner, book a table at Press Food & Wine, five minutes' walk away in Waymouth Street. The loft-style space (above its ground-floor eatery) offers a relaxed atmosphere and fine cuisine using many proudly local ingredients, and its wine list offers plenty of local and international options. After dinner, make your way to the atmospheric Proof Bar, in nearby Anster Street, for a very memorable nightcap.
