MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE FIVE DAYS IN SWITZERLAND WITH TWO NIGHTS TO SEE THE TOP OF EUROPE. IS THIS WORKABLE AND SHOULD WE BUY A SWISS PASS BEFORE WE GO? C. METTI, GREEN POINT NSW

A Swiss Rail Pass swiss-pass.ch would be ideal, and there are several versions. Book it before you leave and whichever you choose, make sure it gives you a discount on the mountain railway to Jungfraujoch. Two years ago I paid full fare – almost $600 for my wife and I.

Interlaken for two nights to do the trip to Jungfraujoch is short. The weather is totally unpredictable and it changes fast. If the clouds are low you won't see a thing. You need at least one day more to allow for bad weather, however with your tight itinerary I don't see how you can stay any longer than one day.
