Ferries in Italy: How to get around the tiny 5kg luggage allowance

By Michael Gebicki
The free baggage allowance on the ferries from Naples to Capri and along the Amalfi coast is limited to about what you could expect to get away with as cabin luggage on a flight, but it's better to travel light.

PLANNING TO TAKE THE FERRY FROM NAPLES TO CAPRI, POSITANO AND AMALFI, THEN TO BARI FOR A COUPLE NIGHTS VIA MATERA. CONCERNED ABOUT LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE AS FERRIES STATE FIVE KILOGRAMS MAXIMUM. WE BOTH HAVE 15-KILOGRAM SUITCASES. CAN WE PAY FOR THE EXCESS? D. AND T. JONES, TORQUAY, HERVEY BAY QLD.

The free baggage allowance on the ferries from Naples to Capri and along the Amalfi coast is limited to about what you could expect to get away with as cabin luggage on a flight, but it's easy to buy a ticket for as much luggage as you're taking on board. Just show them what you've got at the ticket window and they'll work it out, and it shouldn't make too much of a dent in your wallet. Another consideration, you really want to travel light. Schlepping heavy luggage around on the cobblestones and sharp hills of Capri and in the other delicious hotspots along this coast is no fun. You can make use of baggage services to get your gear from the ferry terminal to your hotel but you might also consider leaving your heavier bags at Naples, either at your hotel or at the Ki Point office at Naples Central Station, and returning there from Amalfi before continuing to Matera. Travel time from either Amalfi or Naples to Matera is about the same.

Rather than ordering room service from your hotel's menu, check the local dining options on Uber Eats and cross-reference with your favourite restaurant-finder app. You'll probably get a more interesting meal at a lower price.
