The town was established at the mouth of the Tomahawk River at the end of the 1860s when gold was discovered in the region. Initially known as Du Cane (after Governor Charles Du Cane) it was, for a short period, a busy port as men and supplies were unloaded at the local jetty to head off to the Ringarooma district goldfields. The goldrush was short lived. The town declined in importance. Today it is a quiet holiday resort on a very beautiful stretch of coastline.
