MY SON HAS A 14-PLUS HOUR STOPOVER IN DOHA. WHAT ARE HIS BEST OPTIONS TO PASS THE TIME AND SEE SOMETHING OF DOHA? T. WEBBER, CANBERRA, ACT

Your son should apply in advance for a transit visa, accessible via the Qatar Airways website qatarairways.com/au/en/qatar-transit-visa.page. This allows him to enter Qatar free of charge for up to 96 hours.

The Museum of Islamic Arts, mia.org.qa/en, is a significant and engaging collection of artefacts in ceramics, glass, metal and textiles assembled from across the world of Islam. Note the closing hours on the website.

Doha's Souq Waqif is a great hangout, a bustling Bedouin market packed with traditional arts and crafts and artisans busy at their work. There are plenty of shisha cafes in the surroundings, great to relax when the souq closes early in the afternoon. Nearby is the falcon souq, a really fascinating side of Arabian culture, don't miss it. Liveliest in the evening.
