AFTER SEVERAL DAYS IN CEPHALONIA, GREECE, ANY SUGGESTIONS WHERE TO SPEND 10 NIGHTS BEFORE SLOVENIA, AND HOW TO GET THERE? PREFER WARM, BEACHY PLACES. K. PURDHAM, MOUNT WAVERLEY, VIC

One place that would fit is the Dalmatian Islands, off the coast of Croatia. They're well endowed with beaches, warm in summer, packed with history, the swimming is great and the food and accommodation scene is lively. There are also plenty of one-week cruises you can do through these islands and they're great value. The best way I can find to get to Split is fly to Rome then Rome to Split, which could cost just over $200 if you take the cheapest flights. Rather than staying in Split you might overnight in Trogir, a really charming town which is actually closer to Split Airport than Split itself.

Hotel Pasike [hotelpasike.com] is quaint and full of character. You'll find plenty to do from Trogir, including island cruises. Hvar is the easiest to reach and one of the superstars although I prefer Korcula, with its mini fortress encased in honey-coloured walls. Check the Visit Croatia website [visit-croatia.co.uk] for cruises and you'll find plenty of choice. Liveaboard cruises usually operate on a one-week itinerary. If this is your choice, check your selection on TripAdvisor [tripadvisor.com.au], some of the cheaper cruises are aimed at young travellers looking to party.
