MY SON HAS A 14-PLUS HOUR STOPOVER IN DOHA. WHAT ARE HIS BEST OPTIONS TO PASS THE TIME AND SEE SOMETHING OF DOHA? T. WEBBER, CANBERRA

Your son should apply in advance for a transit visa, which will allow him to enter Qatar free of charge for up to 96 hours. See qatarairways.com/au/en/qatar-transit-visa.page

The Museum of Islamic Arts (mia.org.qa/en/) is seriously wonderful, a significant and engaging collection of artefacts in ceramics, glass, metal and textiles assembled from across the world of Islam, from north Africa across the Middle East into China and south-east Asia. Note the closing hours on the website.

Doha's Souq Waqif is a great place to hang out, a bustling Bedouin market packed with traditional arts and crafts and artisans busy at their work. There are plenty of shisha cafes in the surroundings, great to relax when the souq closes early in the afternoon. Nearby is the falcon souq, a really fascinating side of Arabian culture, don't miss it. Liveliest in the evening.

Only if time allows, Doha Fort is a museum of Qatari traditional handcrafts, gold work, paintings and historic photographs. The museum also houses exhibitions detailing many of Kuwait's Bedouin handicrafts such as Sadu weaving and other Bedouin ornaments, fishing gear, boat-building and rope-making.
