Travel tips: What's the best way to get from London to Stornoway
WE ARE TWO FIT LADIES IN OUR SEVENTIES, WONDERING HOW TO GET FROM LONDON TO STORNOWAY. WE INTEND TO HIRE A CAR TO TOUR HARRIS AND LEWIS. M. PENGELLY, WESTLEIGH
Quickest route to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is to fly from Heathrow with flybe (flybe.com). Total travel time, including getting out to the airport from central London, is about six hours.
You can also take a train to Inverness, then a bus to Ullapool and cross to Lewis on the ferry, total travel time about 14 hours. The maximum you would save over the flight would be about $60 and unless you want to see bits of Britain and Scotland whizzing by at high speed, the flight would be a better choice.
There are several options for car hire on Lewis, including Stornoway Car Hire (stornowaycarhire.co.uk), Lewis Car Rental, (lewis-car-rental.com) and Carhire Hebrides (carhire-hebrides.co.uk).
