Avue Retreat, Halls Gap accommodation review: Weekend away

Avue Retreat, Halls Gap

The location

About three hours' drive north-west of Melbourne, Halls Gap is nestled in the heart of the Grampians National Park, which has long been a mecca for bushwalkers and rock climbers. But the region's wineries and emerging gastronomic culture are increasingly attracting those in search of more sedentary relaxation.

The place

Handy to the Halls Gap village, Avue Retreat sits at the foot of the Mount William ranges, which crackle each morning with the sound of cockatoos and corellas wending their way up the Fyans Valley. While bushfires ravaged large swathes of the Grampians last summer, Halls Gap was left largely unscathed and the views from this three-bedroom home are spectacular. The spacious accommodation includes a massive living area and fully appointed kitchen, while a free-standing spa in the master bedroom will appeal to weary hikers or parents looking for respite from the kids. The furnishings may not be to everyone's taste, however, with the faux zebra-skin couches and red feature wall looking more Graceland than Grampians.

The experience

It's almost impossible to walk anywhere around Halls Gap without encountering kangaroos, emus or wallabies, which makes it an ideal destination for families with young kids or overseas tourists wanting to acquaint themselves with obliging local wildlife. During summer holidays and long weekends, the scenic campground opposite the township swells with visitors who explore the National Park and Lakes Bellfield, Wartook and Fyans.

Don't miss

After negotiating the 160 kilometres of walking paths that intersect the national park, make the hour-long drive to Dunkeld in the Southern Grampians. This picturesque village is home to Victoria's most acclaimed regional restaurant, The Royal Mail Hotel, while many day spas and yoga retreats provide a more salutary alternative.
