San Sebastian tips and advice

By Michael Gebicki
San Sebastian: glorious food.

San Sebastian: glorious food.

A GROUP OF COUPLES ARE LOOKING TO GO FROM BARCELONA TO SAN SEBASTIAN IN SEPTEMBER, 2017. WE'LL BE DRIVING TO GET A FEEL FOR THE AREA AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME GUIDANCE, INCLUDING SUGGESTIONS FOR ACCOMMODATION, LOCAL RESTAURANTS, ETC. WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST FOR A FIVE-NIGHT CAR TRIP?

I. PARDEY, PALM BEACH

There are so many tempting options here you could tie yourself in knots trying to knit them all together. Since you will have had a wonderful city experience in Barcelona you might be in the mood for fresh air and scenery and regional cuisine and what I'd do is head north from Barcelona to the village of Salardu in the Val d'Aran, one of the most glorious valleys in the Pyrenees region of Spain. Spend two nights at the super little Hotel Mauberne hotelmauberme.com/, there are some glorious walks in this region, as short or long as you like.

From there drive across the Pyrenees into France and turn west to Pau and then south to the village of Moumour to stay another two nights at the Chateau de Lamothe chateau-de-lamothe.eu, which is an absolute knockout, a classic chateau that dates back to about the 13th century, set on a rise surrounded by forests against the backdrop of the mountains. The regional menu here is excellent.

From here you could head west again for a final night at L' Auberge Basque aubergebasque.com in Saint-Pee. You're in gastronomic heaven here, Frederic Minvielle is a legenday Basque chef. His food is a taste of things to come when you hit San Sebastian, just a short drive away.
