Traveller.com.au's Ben Groundwater named Travel Writer of the Year

Traveller.com.au columnist Ben Groundwater has been named Travel Writer of the Year at the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW) 2014 Journalism Awards for Excellence.

The award ceremony was held in Fiji on Friday evening.

Groundwater, who is currently travelling in Azerbaijan, took out the Travel Writer of the Year award for three of his stories featured on Traveller.com.au. The winning stories included "Night visions after dark", a feature on Tokyo's nightlife; "The type of town that makes travelling great" about a ghost town in Nevada and "Gone native, no bula", where he describes his experiences in a traditional Fijian lodge.

Two other Traveller.com.au writers also received awards for their work. Kerry van der Jagt's "Saltwater dreaming" won in the category Best Australian Story over 1000 words for her investigation of Shark Bay in Western Australia.

Robert McFarland won Best International Story Over 1000 Words for "Working on the chain gang", a story about testing his endurance and his bike shorts cycling around Europe.

Belinda Jackson won best cruising story for "Searching for the glow" about seeing the Northern Lights on a Norwegian cruise, while Louise Southerden won best luxury story for her piece on the Ulusaba lodge in South Africa.

There were 17 winners selected altogether over a broad spectrum of categories.

ASTW president Kerry Heaney praised the success of the event which was held at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa.

"Our members have produced a superb array of written words, photography, digital content and public relations campaigns over the last 12 months and we congratulate all of this year's winners."

The ASTW is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes ethical and honest travel and the unbiased reporting of it, and it contains more than 300 members.
