Unattached or not, all rails lead to Rome

By Michael Gebicki

I'm single and travelling to Europe in September and October. I have about 2½ weeks to travel from London to Rome, where I'll join a tour. I plan to travel to Paris, Barcelona, the Cinque Terre, Pisa and Florence. Do you have any other must-see destinations on the way to Rome? What is the best way of travelling to these places and do you have recommendations for people travelling alone?

- J. Gock, Sydney.

While this is already a robust itinerary for the time allowed, you might want to maintain the "spectacular cities" theme and throw Venice into the mix.

In that case, the best plan would be to fly from Paris to Barcelona and then to Venice and from there continue by rail. You might also consider a day or two in Siena, Tuscany (pictured), a jewel of mediaeval and Renaissance architecture minus the crowds of its northern neighbour, on your way south from Florence. Rail is best for shorter journeys in Europe. At that time of the year, you won't need to book ahead, so you can stay flexible. Solo travel can be a joy in countries as vivacious as Italy and Spain.

You might find yourself a little lonely at the dinner table but, from experience, single travellers are far more approachable than couples and chances are you will have plenty of interaction.
