Vail buys Perisher: Aspen fires back with new SKI30 pass

By Jim Darby
Aspen has launched the new "SKI30" pass to woo Aussie skiers.

Aspen has launched the new "SKI30" pass to woo Aussie skiers.

The first response to the recent announcement that Vail Resorts in Colorado would buy Australia's biggest resort, Perisher, and extend lift ticket privileges at all 10 Vail resorts to Perisher's season pass holders has come, not from Australia, but the US.

Aspen, which counts Australia among its top overseas markets has launched a "SKI30" pass which will give 30 (consecutive) days skiing between January 1 and April 17, 2016. Priced at $US630 ($A826 ) it also comes with a "kids ski free" offer (if equipment rental is also paid for).

It has come in well on top of the Perisher/Vail $A749 season pass, but it must reflect Aspen's concern over losing its Australian skiers to Vail Resorts.

Mike Kaplan, Aspen Skiing Company chief executive, says the resort plays host to many very loyal Australian guests and the SKI30 was an ideal way of recognising that loyalty. "The pass is perfect for Australians who tend to stay longer and often bring their families."

He said the SKI30 pass costs "approximately the same as our seven-day lift ticket."
