Question

We're travelling by car from Launceston to Hobart next month. Can you recommend beautiful "must-see" places off the tourist trail? My partner and I love an "old-world" feel and places with character.

- M.Whelan, Waterloo.

Answer

In Launceston, visit the Cataract Gorge. Walk from King's Bridge to the tea rooms, take the chairlift across and back, then congratulate yourselves later at Boags Brewery. From Launceston, go south-west for a few kilometres, to take in Westbury and Hadspen. Then turn around and take the Midland Highway. It's at least a two-day mooch on this stretch alone exploring Evandale, Longford and on to Oatlands. If it's Sunday, go to the Evandale markets. Detour to Deddington, near Evandale, for the lovely old cemetery where landscape artist John Glover is buried. Brickendon Farm and Woolmers Estate in Longford and Clarendon House at Nile, south of Evandale, are worth a look. Head south again, through Campbell Town, to Ross. Enjoy a beer in front of the fire at the Ross pub, then take a look at the Ross Bridge, with its intricate convict carvings - satirical images of the convict sculptor's jailers.

Retrace your steps north and turn off at the Lake Leake Highway and drive to the east coast. Take a day walk to Wineglass Bay at Freycinet. From there, detour north for the fairy penguins and seafood at Bicheno, then take the highway (aka the A3) towards Hobart. Turn off at Shelly Beach and take the ferry to Maria Island.
