Question

I don't like carrying or sleeping in tents. My partner and I did a New Zealand walk in their national parks, where rustic huts are spaced at a day's walking distance and you book a cheap, overnight bunk bed. Is there anything similar in NSW?

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service maintains an extensive series of trails for walkers.

Many alpine huts were lost in bushfires but some are being rebuilt (see kosciuszkohuts.org.au). Don't rely on reaching huts in Kosciuszko, as many are not suitable for sleeping. If you want to walk in Kosciuszko, contact the Snowy Region Visitor Centre's Jindabyne office on (02) 6450 5600 or see visitnsw.com.

Wildwalks, an online bushwalking guide, has detailed information on 793 walks and nearby public transport. Matt McClelland of Wildwalks says the Six Foot Track from Katoomba to the Jenolan Caves can include an overnight stay in bunks at the Six Foot Track lodge and walkers can also book a Jenolan Caves Cottages stay for the following night (see wildwalks.com).

Some operators host self-guided inn-to-inn walks and take care of your luggage, for a fee. Truly Australia has a six-night Kosciuszko High Country Walk priced from $1450 a person, twin share (see trulyaustralia.com).

The Great North Walk, from Sydney to the Hunter, includes a Sydney to Hawkesbury component. No huts — you book hotels and pubs en route. Get a map kit at lands.nsw.gov.au. Or try a Great North self-guided inn-to-inn walk with Auswalk (www.auswalk.com.au).
