AirAsia has added a new service to India's Amritsar, and to celebrate the new route, will offer fares to passengers for $199 one-way.

The fares will be available for three days from 17-19 August for travel between January 1 and 13 August, 2019.

The new route will fly from Sydney, Perth, Gold Coast and Melbourne Avalon, their new Melbourne hub, to Kuala Lumpur, from where they will offer a Fly-Thru service to Amritsar.

From Kuala Lumpur, they will offer four evening flights a week to Amritsar.

AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said, "Amritsar is of significant interest to tourists thanks to the Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple) and the city's numerous historic and cultural sites.

"Following a recent network review, Amritsar and other cities in India were identified as being underserved from the Asia Pacific region, particularly when it comes providing affordable long-haul travel.

"We are confident the new services will prove popular for both tourist and domestic visitors alike."

Amritsar is home to The Golden Temple, which is one of India's most holy and humbling sites.

The city is located in the northern state of Punjab, near the Pakistani border.
