The location Bondi Beach, 25 minutes' drive from Sydney's CBD, is perhaps the most popular stretch of coastline in Australia, with Australia's first official surf lifesaving club - the first in the world - founded here in 1906. Not surprisingly, it can sometimes be tricky finding space big enough to spread a beach towel.
The place Set on a quiet leafy street, Bondi Beach House is 2 minutes' walk from the bustling beachfront. The rooms vary in price and size, but all are kitted out with Australian artworks and rustic-chic furnishings. The well-equipped communal kitchen is a natural meeting place, while the generous terrace balconies are ideal for relaxing in the sunshine.
The experience Bondi Beach is synonymous with surf, sun and all things coastal, so expect to spend your time with your toes in the sand. The finest way to take in the sweeping ocean views is the coast walk from Bondi to Bronte. It's not particularly taxing, but a picnic pit-stop along the way is still highly recommended.
Don't miss Once dominated by bad takeaway restaurants, Bondi Beach's cuisine credentials have radically improved of late.
Set on the beachfront, The Bucket List (Bondi Pavilion, Queen Elizabeth Drive; 02 9365 4122) started as a "pop-up" bar and eatery, but its popularity has seen it become a permanent fixture.
Try a bucket of fish and chips, or for something sweet opt for the salted caramel chocolate tartlet with crème fraîche. ruth kotevich
