A 27-year-old American woman appears likely to earn a Guinness World Record after travelling to all of the world's 196 countries in 18 months and 26 days.

Cassie De Pecol's journey not only looks to have smashed the record for visiting all the countries of the world in the shortest amount of time, it is also a first for a woman, according to Forbes magazine. The previous Guinness record was three years and three months.

The Guinness website says American Yili Liu set the previous record as the fastest solo globetrotter from September 2007 to December 2010. He visited the 194 sovereign countries recognised at the time by the United Nations.

De Pecol said on her Expedition 196 Facebook page that her goal was "to inspire the world through her travels and connect with citizens of the world". She said she would be carrying "the banner of world peace in travelling as a world citizen".

She also said she wanted to bring light to the subject of women travelling solo, which she said doesn't get the attention it deserves.

De Pecol set off from the island nation of Palau in July 2015 with $US10,000 ($A13,030) that she had saved doing babysitting jobs. She typically spent three to five days in each country before ending her trek in Yemen on February 2.

After using all of her funds De Pecol managed to win sponsors, including the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism.

Among the projects De Pecol is promoting is "Pack for a Purpose", which encourages travellers to bring educational materials to poor countries they visit.
