Melbourne design firm BAR Studio and Hyatt hotels have something of a love affair going. The esteemed interiors company created spaces for the Park Hyatt Sydney and Grand Hyatt Melbourne and now have reimagined key parts of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. BAR Studio director and co-founder Stewart Robertson has created new Grand Suites for the iconic harbourside property.

"The greatest challenge of the project was working with the expectations of such a great hotel and trying to take it into the next generation," says Robertson. "I was aware of how much people love Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, and how much a part of their history and their memories it is. We were trying to retain what was great from the original hotel, keeping the hotel's appeal to the people who already love it, but also appeal to the next generation."

Robertson and his team based the individual designs of each suite on the concept of "a group of sophisticated, rather eccentric travellers and the cultural journeys that led them through the doors of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong."

The 80-square-metre Diplomat Harbour View Suite is themed around the Aristocratic Adventurer: "an explorer, a bon vivant, a well-travelled visitor looking for sophisticated charm".

The 110-square-metre Ambassador Harbour View Suite's theme is Bohemian Chic. And the 400-square-metre Presidential Suites – well, they're simply fit for globe-trotting presidents and royalty, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, a large foyer, principal living room, junior living room, study, steam room, and 10-seat dining room with a pantry and a butler entrance.

BAR Studio has also redesigned the hotel's popular Grand Cafe.

From HK$33,000 a night for the Ambassador Suite. Rooms from HK$3520. See hongkong.grand.hyatt.com
