George Harris and Linda Looney run the Alien Research Centre in Crystal Springs, Nevada, in the US. The centre is 32 kilometres from the US military base known as Area 51, on the 157-kilometre Extra-terrestrial Highway. See alienresearchcenter.com

STEP ONE

Once, this was a nameless road. It was just State Route 375. Now it's the Extra-terrestrial Highway, from Warm Springs to Crystal Springs, which is 175 kilometres north of Las Vegas. The stretch between Crystal Springs and Rachel (human population 76, alien population...?) is where most sightings have been. Go out and stargaze and if you're lucky, you might see something in the sky. We have. We've seen different things we know aren't jets. But maybe not. Anything's possible. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.

STEP TWO

People often confuse aircraft for UFOs. UFOs are usually circular in shape. Prep beforehand with the TV series Ancient Aliens, now in its 13th season, which covers such topics as aliens in ancient history, Area 51 and nearby Area 52.

STEP THREE

Visit the Alien Research Centre for maps and advice: we've got satellite pictures, and can give people directions to get to the road that the workers take into Area 51 and the location of the black mailbox. The mailbox isn't there anymore, the rancher who owned it took it down because everyone was destroying it, but there are still plenty of sightings there. Otherwise, my uncle makes Alien Tequila, which is distributed in 38 states. We say there's an abduction in every bottle. See alientequila.com

STEP FOUR

The Lunar Crater is almost 120 metres across, and was used to train astronauts in the 1960s for the Apollo space mission. You can hike down into the crater: it's a great trip. You can also reach the Back Gate at Area 51, but cross the fence and you face a $600 fine, so it's best to take a tour. Planet XV runs UFO hunting night tours near Area 51. See planetxv.com

STEP FIVE

Try the Alien Burger at Little A'Le'Inn in Rachel. It's made with hamburger. It also has rooms and RV spots available. See littlealeinn.com. If you're happy to stay away from the action, there are more upmarket hotels in Alamo. People often camp out on the road between Crystal Springs and Rachel, including in our parking lot, which faces Area 51, and in the middle of the night, have spotted spheres here for up to 20 minutes.
