Japan looks set to open a spa-themed amusement park where visitors can soak in hot pools while riding on rollercoasters.

The mayor of Beppu City, known for its hot springs, said that the "Spamusement" park would be built if a promotional video reached one million views on YouTube.

The bizarre video, which has been watched more than two million times, gives people an idea of what they can expect from the onsen theme park.

We were surprised by the rapid, speedy response, which allowed us to reach our target of one million views in just four days after the clip was uploaded to YouTube, " the city's mayor, Yasuhiro Nagano, said.

"I believe that, as one of the world's best hot spring tourist spots, the appeal of having an onsen [a Japanese hot spring] theme park in the town creates an opportunity for the citizens of Beppu, particularly young residents, to feel that 'Beppu is fun' and have a sense of pride for their hometown."

However, it is unclear when and where the park will be built.

"It's only an image. We are still discussing safety issues, for example, whether we could actually run hot water inside a roller coaster," Michitaka Kubota, a spokesman for the city's tourist department told The Japan Times.
