Rottnest beaches reopened after shark sighting

By Aja Styles

Rottnest Island's beaches have been reopened this afternoon following a shark sighting about three hours ago.

Several beaches at Rottnest were closed after a two-metre shark was spotted off the island's north-west beach, The Basin.

Surf Life Saving WA's helicopter saw the bronze whaler at 10.14am and informed local rangers, who have since shut beaches at the Basin, Longreach, Thomson Bay and Pinky Bay.

The shark was seen 500 metres west of Duck Rock.

School leavers are expected to start heading over to the island today as part of their end of year celebrations, which kicks off this evening.

The helicopter, Life Saver One, is expected to return to Rottnest to monitor the shark's movements after it has refueled.
