After a star-studded, near-royal wedding, newlyweds Pippa Middleton and James Matthews have taken off for their honeymoon in French Polynesia.

The couple were spotted in Los Angeles International Airport on May 23, reportedly boarding an Air New Zealand flight to Tahiiti, where they will relax following the whirlwind wedding weekend.

According to British media, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge and her husband will spend their honeymoon on The Brando, a luxury resort on the private island of Tetiaroa.

Named after actor Marlon Brando who bought the island in 1966, the resort, about 50 kilometres from Taihiti, has 35 thatched villas. The Brando is a luxury resort on Tetiaroa in French Polynesia.

Each has its own pool and private beach aspect, something that would appeal to the actor whose credits include The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire, who once declared, "Privacy is not something that I'm merely entitled to, it's an absolute prerequisite".

Famous for his reclusiveness as for his talent, Brando first visited Tahiti in 1960 filming Mutiny on the Bounty.

He fell in love with his Tahitian co-star Tarita Teriipaia, they had two children together and in 1966, Brando was granted a 99-year lease to the island.

Now the all-inclusive resort provides access to the island by private plane and as well as endless luxury, calls itself a model for sustainable technology.

With sea water air-conditioning and solar and coconut oil energy, the newlyweds might spend their time in the spa overlooking a lily pond, go for a spot of tennis or take part in some water sports.

As it's currently classed as low season, rates for a one-bedroom villa start at 3000 Euro ($4502) or, if they really want to splash the cash, $14,400 for a three-bedroom villa.

But it doesn't stop there. According to British tabloid, The Sun, Middleton and Matthews will have a second honeymoon in Scotland, where the financier's family owns a 10,000-acre estate near Loch Ness.
