Tim Macartney-Snape, mountaineer, explorer, writer, adventure guide.

HOTEL

Mwagusi Safari Camp, Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. It's down in the rift valley near where I was born and is owned and run by Chris Fox whom I would have baby-sat on occasion. When my family was forced out, we moved back to my father's country but the extended family stayed on, so I still know people there. It's an impeccably run luxury camp but authentic and in the middle of a vast piece of Africa that is still rich in wildlife. It's a little slice of original Africa, of incalculable value to us all in the human family. See mwagusicamp.com.

AIRLINE

I'm a Qantas fan, the service is friendly and dependable and back in less security minded times, I was often invited to sit in the jump seat for take-off and landing – always exciting.

RESORT

Lodge Nutapukaushipe, Asahidake, Hokkaido, Japan. Because it's small, the lodge feels exclusive. It is hand-built from local timber over a thermal spring in the shadow of Hokkaido's highest peak and close to the world's best backcountry powder skiing. The food is delightful, as are the owner/operators, who are impressive in their knowledge of the local area and the Ainu, who were the indigenous people of Hokkaido.

LUGGAGE

I always use Sea to Summit Travelling Light bags to organise my luggage – keeping it neat, accessible and compact without adding much extra weight.

ACCESSORY

Noise-cancelling headphones and SmartWool compression socks.

NEXT ADVENTURE

Next April, I'm going to far western Nepal to the Api and Saipal massifs, a rarely visited part of the Himalaya where I will be conducting one of my regular exploratory treks for World Expeditions. Much of the walk will be along shepherds' trails and higher up above the tree line, I'll be finding our own way over glaciated passes and, because the locals don't normally go beyond the permanent snow line, there is a chance that we will be the first people ever to visit some of those places.

Tim Macartney-Snape is doing a national speaking tour to mark 30 years since his historic Mount Everest climb. It starts in Canberra, October 15. Tickets are $20 and all proceeds support charity projects. Book tickets at worldexpeditions.com.
