Shangri-La Sydney hotel renovation: First look at $8 million revamp

As if the amazing views of Sydney Harbour from the top of the Shangri-La Hotel weren't backdrop enough for a selfie or two, the five-star beauty now has a new club lounge from which to take advantage of them.

You may be encouraged to put down the selfie stick though – there's a lot of good stuff going on in what is now claimed to be Australia's biggest such lounge and its accompanying club rooms. The hotel has undergone an $8 million revamp. There are 90 newly refurbished hotel rooms and suites on the hotel's top five accommodation levels, including two additional rooms – a Grand Harbour View and a Darling Harbour View room.

The Horizon Club Lounge covers 335 square metres, with a giant brass and crystal light feature, by award-winning lighting designers Point of View as its striking centre-piece. The lounge's expanded dining area accommodates 123 people, an additional 47 seats, and features a four-metre long marble-topped communal table with a cold well, where self-serve Australian wines are for the taking.

Horizon Club accommodation includes such perks as coffees made by trained baristas, and house-made butter and honey from the hotel's rooftop beehive, private check in, 4pm check out, evening drinks and canapes, and lots more things to boast about on Instagram. Except of course, the likely clientele are privacy-valuing, upmarket types who will enjoy their daily complimentary pressing of a suit or dress and shoe shine, their pillow menu and personalised welcome letter more than likes on Facebook.

And as for the hotelier, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney's vice-president and general manager, Michael Cottan, maintains it's all about that view. "The Horizon Club lounge … cleverly connects the interiors of this beautifully designed space with the extraordinary views of Sydney. It really transports our guests to a place of enjoyment and relaxation during their stay." No selfie stick required.

Lead-in rate for Horizon Club rooms is $510 and $4895 for the Royal Suite till the end of February. See shangri-la.com
