Small world

SeaDream Yacht Club has five itineraries on SeaDream I in the Mediterranean departing this October that will feature small ports in Italy and France, many of which can't be accessed by large cruise ships. The seven-night sailings include cruises from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Cannes, Cannes round-trip, Cannes to Civitavecchia and Cannes to Malaga. Ports of call vary on each itinerary but include the likes of Capri, Elba, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Portofino, Livorno, Porto Ercole, Sorrento, Barcelona, Valencia and Calvi in Corsica. Some have overnight stays in Monte Carlo, Bonifacio or St Tropez.

Into the groove

Captain Cook Cruises is launching a new, three-night music-inspired cruise on Australia's Murray River departing on 5 August on the paddlewheeler Murray Princess. The cruise celebrates the music of the seventies, eighties and nineties and is accompanied by Adelaide radio presenter Dom Rinaldo. It features themed food, cocktails and sounds, music trivia events and dance competitions, and culminates in a 1970s costume party. The cruise takes in the historic ports of Mannum and Murray Bridge, a guided nature walk at Salt Bush Flat, Riverland food and wine tasting, and a wildlife tour.

Intercontinental drift

Sea Cloud Cruises has released its 2017 itineraries. In the early months of the year, its two sailing vessels will cruise between the British Virgin Islands, Lesser Antilles and Grenadines, as well as making visits to Costa Rica and Cuba. The windjammer Sea Cloud will then cruise extensively in the eastern and western Mediterranean and Adriatic, whilst sister ship Sea Cloud II will spend most of the summer (apart from a short time in the Mediterranean) in northern and western Europe, with various routes in the Baltic, Scandinavia, UK and French Atlantic coastline.

America ahoy

Crystal Cruises is repositioning Crystal Serenity from Europe to North America in 2017, offering routes along the east and west coasts, through Alaska, New England and eastern Canada, as well as the eastern seaboard into the Caribbean. Among the new cruises is a repositioning voyage from Miami to Los Angeles via the Panama Canal, seven-day explorations of California, a 14-day intensive Mexico itinerary, and a 16-day route through the Hawaiian islands. Crystal Serenity will be replaced in Europe with new yacht Crystal Esprit and five river vessels as the company enters the river-cruise market.

Space odyssey

Polar adventure cruise line Quark Expeditions has announced that astronaut Chris Hadfield will accompany the company's expedition to the Canadian High Arctic and Greenland this year on the icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov. Hadfield, an engineer and former RCAF fighter pilot, was the first Canadian to walk in space, flew two space-shuttle missions and was a commander of the International Space Station. He will present passengers with science-based entertainment about voyages of exploration. Among the cruise's attractions are Greenlandic fishing villages, spectacular Ilulissat Fjord, the bird-dense cliffs of Cobourg Island and historic Beechey Island.
