Where to go before we start a Israel and Jordan tour?

By Michael Gebicki

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BOOKED A TOUR OF ISRAEL AND JORDAN WITH FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE TOUR STARTS, WHERE COULD WE SPEND THAT TIME? IRAN, CYPRUS OR A FEW DAYS ON THE COAST OF ISRAEL? IS BETHLEHEM SAFE? M. FOWLER, SYDNEY NSW

Shuffling between Iran and Israel is not easy since they're far from the best of friends. Cyprus is feasible, and there are non-stop flights between Larnaca and Tel Aviv, but unless you have a special reason to visit Cyprus you could spend it on the coast of Israel. One possibility is Caesarea, located just north of Tel Aviv and known as a posh residential neighbourhood with impressive Roman ruins from the time when this was a bustling port. A livelier option is the port city of Haifa, which tumbles down from the heights of Mount Carmel, just a little further north. Haifa would be a better choice if you're feeling energetic enough to take in the city's museums, the magnificent Baha'i Gardens and the cafes and restaurants of the city's German Colony. Provided you're with a tour operator you need have no qualms about visiting Bethlehem.
