Todd McKenney: Remember to have a holiday when you're on a holiday.
MY BEST HOLIDAY
Was a trip on the Trans-Mongolian Railway from Beijing to Moscow. We had just over three weeks on a train travelling through some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. We ran out of food halfway through, but it was such an adventure I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
THE BEST HOTEL I'VE STAYED IN
Is called the Hotel Eden. It's in Rome at the top of the Spanish steps and is your quintessential romantic Italian hotel, complete with little shutters that open up to an outlook over Rome. It has a little cocktail bar where you can sit in the afternoon and have margaritas and finger sandwiches and watch the sun setting over the city. I love it.
I ALWAYS TAKE
Ear plugs as they cover a whole variety of different situations – from annoying people next to you on a plane; to building sites next to hotels. So spend the money and buy quality ear plugs.
THE INGREDIENTS FOR A PERFECT HOLIDAY INCLUDE
Good friends, enough money, a great hotel and fabulous reading material.
THE BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE
Just remember to have a holiday when you're on a holiday. You don't have to work at it all day every day, going out and seeing every single thing. Sometimes it's good just to wander around and see where it takes you. I have no problem just sitting at a cafe all day and watching people, that's a real treat.
MY WORST EXPERIENCE ON HOLIDAY
Taking too big a suitcase on the Trans-Mongolian railway – it took up the whole cabin. We ended up calling it Kevin because it was like having an extra person along for the journey.
MY BIGGEST PACKING MISTAKE
Just taking way too much stuff. I'm not going to take my gym clothes. In reality I'm not going to go to the gym when I'm in Hong Kong, or wherever, in fact. For some reason I think I need to pack two pairs of runners, two pairs of gym shorts, two singlets, but I'm never going to use them.
NEXT ON MY LIST
I'm going to sing at a friend's wedding in Los Angeles in July and then I'm coming home via Las Vegas for a bit of showbiz. After that I have five days of sitting on a a beach in Honolulu planned. I can't wait.
