Where's the worst place in the world to be stuck? A lift? Locked out of your house? Close to some of the world's best tropical beaches?

Ash from a volcano has led to flights being cancelled on the Indonesian island of Bali, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. Thankfully, a quick glance at social media shows most are dealing with their misfortune well.

Scores of Instagram and Twitter users have adopted the hashtag #stuckinbali to reveal the ways in which they are keeping themselves amused.

Some have been hanging out at the pool, others have taken a stroll by the beach.

"So ready to come home," says one, while posing in front of a tropical pond with frangipani in her hair.

Others are idling with a cocktail in the pool

Snorkelling...

Beachcombing...

Or befriending locals.

More than 2,000 photos have been posted so far using the hashtag.

However, reports suggest that some travellers who don't want to risk the flight disruption are instead seeking alternative holidays in destinations including Thailand and Hawaii.

Bali's international airport in Denpasar had to be closed between November 3 and 5, reportedly costing Bali's economy $3million. Virgin Australia and Jetstar have cancelled flights over the weekend.
