Bellagio, Villa Carlotta and above all else, Villa del Balbianello are essential viewing. Book into the Terrace Bar at Villa d'Este for dinner and stay around for the band. Varenna is well worth a look, with its tiny harbour and one of the lake's few beaches. Bergamo is one of the loveliest walled towns in Italy. Another must is the trip to Lake Maggiore and Isola Bela, which looks like a wedding cake, overblown and shockingly theatrical but also strangely dreamlike.

In between Como and Lake Maggiore, Varese is an absolute honey of a city. This is style central, a city with personality plus where most of the population look like they've just come from a fashion shoot. Take a stroll along the pedestrian precinct of Corso Matteotti, the city's catwalk. There's a lovely walk past the shrines that line the pilgrimage path up Sacro Monte, and the dining and bar scene is super friendly.
